Everything you need to know about the Wild Cross Rabbit breed
The wild cross domestic rabbit is an unfortunate breed type we see in rescue. Every single domestic rabbit is the same species as the European Wild Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus). When a domestic female rabbit who has not been spayed is abandoned in the wild as a stray and is caught by a wild rabbit male, when she’s rescued the wild cross babies are the unfortunate result.
Appearance
The wild rabbit genetics are exceptionally strong. Wild cross rabbits are predominantly agouti (wild colouring). The other characteristics can vary depending on the domestic, we have had wild cross rabbits with a Lionhead tuft around their head, or white marks on their noses and feet.
Behaviour
The behaviour of any rabbit will vary depending on their history which must always be considered. With good husbandry, wild cross rabbits to tend to be prefer a “hands off” approach with their carers and do absolutely retain some “wildness” to them. They are often very athletic and exceptionally good escape artists.
Health
Health of any rabbit will depend on their history and breeding. Wild cross rabbits are generally fairly healthy and should not suffer from genetic health issues based on their characteristics.
