Everything you need to know about the Lionhead Rabbit breed
The Lionhead is an increasingly common breed we see in rescue. They are characterised by a “lion’s mane” of extra fluff around their head and ears.
Appearance
They are a small to medium sized breed depending on their breeding. Usually around 2-3kg. They come in a large range of colours.
There are two main types of Lionhead, the single mane and the double mane. The single mane may only have a small amount of fluff around the head, while the double mane can be extremely fluffy around the head, often extending to the rest of the body and ears.
They have also been crossed with Lops to create the Lion Lop. You can read more about them on our page about Lop rabbits.

Behaviour
The behaviour of any rabbit will vary depending on their history which must always be considered. With good husbandry, Lionhead rabbits can be very active and curious rabbits.
Health
Health of any rabbit will depend on their history and breeding. Unfortunately all that extra fluff comes with extra maintenance. They do need daily grooming to ensure they do not develop any matts. Hay and shavings can easily get tangled in their fur. They also need their eyes monitoring as they can get hair and eyelashes in their eyes.
The double mane extra fluffy rabbits can also develop issues with cleanliness around their bottom.
