Housing

Please note that in order to meet our adoption requirements which are based upon RWAF guidelines all runs must be 10ftx6ft and at least 3ft tall and hutches must be a minimum of 6ft by 2ft by 2ft and be two thirds enclosed with solid doors. All runs must be made from weld mesh and not chicken wire, be securely roofed and also be dig-proofed ideally by placing them on hard standing.

Aviaries, sheds and play houses can also make great rabbit homes and they have the added bonus of making it easier to clean out and spend time with your rabbits.

Food & Toys

Rabbits should be fed a diet which is made up of at least 80% hay or grass, there are many different varieties of hay to try!

Rabbits should be fed around 5% high fibre pellets. At the rescue we use Supreme Science Selective pellets but Fibrefirst are also very good too.

15% of your rabbits diet should be made up of fresh herbs or vegetables. Remember to limit root vegetables as they are sugary and only feed a tiny amount of fruit as an occasional treat. There’s a list of safe vegetables on the RWAF website here.

Alternatively, freshly gathered wild plants or dried wild plants can be part of a healthy rabbits diet too. There are many plants or trees you may already have in your garden that your bunnies would love as well as some that may be toxic too. A brief list of toxic plants is available on the RWAF website here.

For those of your interested in foraging wild plants for your rabbits, this is an excellent book Foraging for Rabbits by Twigs Way she has also produced a book on gardening for rabbits.

Remember to ensure your rabbit has constant access to clean fresh water. Here at the rescue was use large ceramic dog bowls rather than water bottles as we’ve found the vast majority of rabbits prefer drinking from a bowl.
